Counseling & Mental Health

Mental health refers to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well-being. It is essentially how people act, feel, and think. It may have an impact on relationships, daily life, and physical health. Additionally, the opposite is true; physical and interpersonal aspects of a person's life can influence their mental health.

Maintaining one's mental health might help one continue to enjoy life. Doing this involves balancing life activities, responsibilities, and efforts to achieve psychological well-being. Considering mental health as an essential part of overall health is required. It is especially required now more than ever due to how common mental illness is in the population. In 2017, 197.3 million Indians (14.3% of the total population) were suffering from various mental disorders. Of these, 45.7 million had depression and 44.9 million had anxiety disorders.

One of the best ways to address the underlying cause of mental disorders is counseling, which is typically done by a psychologist, a professionally trained expert who can assist patients to understand the root of their issues and discover natural solutions to solve them through therapy sessions. Counseling is typically talking therapy that allows people to discuss their problems in a peaceful and safe ambiance. It is the process where you talk about your issues in detail either intending to overcome the same or to explore your thoughts comprehensively.

When a person seeks counseling, they suffer from something serious be it mental issues, emotional problems, or family problems, which is attacked by a systematic evaluation that includes a detailed process.
Building rapport :
The first thing your expert does is to make yourself comfortable around them. They focus on developing a good relationship and mutual trust, by using excellent listening skills. When it is effective, it guarantees a solid basis for upcoming conversations and the ongoing counseling process.

Analysis of the issue :
At this point, the expert encourages you to discuss your issues in detail and observes every minute detail. Identifying triggers, timing, contextual circumstances, stress levels, and other contributing aspects is important information for counseling's later stages.

Setting the Goal :
Setting suitable and attainable goals that build on the earlier phases is essential for effective counseling. The client must agree to a series of actions that will result in a certain end, such as solving the problem or coming to terms with it, and the goals must be established and developed together.

Plan of Action :
The counselor designs a course of action for you to execute and observe the outcomes. This stage differs based on the client's circumstances and the counselor's knowledge of various theories. For instance, in divorce counseling, measures are taken to help two people work through this d difficult situation while having a neutral third party guide them through the process, thereby reducing the stress of an imminent divorce.

Termination :
To guarantee that counseling comes to a successful ending while averting feelings of resentment, grief, or worry, it is important to arrange the end of counseling in advance. Early agreement on how therapy will conclude and what success looks like is a necessary step in the process. If things seem to go in the right direction and you start feeling like you're more content with your life, you are inching closer to your goal.

Counselling has many types, such as

Cognitive Therapy:
In this type of therapy, unhelpful thought habits regarding oneself and the outside environment are challenged in order to change undesirable behavior patterns. It is founded on the idea that your thoughts and feelings frequently influence your behavior and emotions.

Behavioral Therapy :
This therapy aims to recognize and assist in changing potentially harmful or unhealthy behaviors. It is based on the idea that all behaviors are taught and that they are modifiable.

Psychoanalysis :
It is a method of analyzing psychic phenomena and treating emotional disorders that involves treatment sessions during which the patient is encouraged to talk freely about personal experiences and especially about early childhood. It is done by investigating the interaction of conscious and unconscious elements in the mind and bringing repressed fears and conflicts into the conscious mind.

Group Therapy :
Group therapy is a type of psychotherapy where one or more therapists interact with a number of patients concurrently in a private setting where persons with similar mental health difficulties can express their emotions. When necessary, the group members help one another.
